Quake 2 in HTML5: No Plugin Necessary to Frag

We've been covering Quake Live, which is a great way to play the classic first-person shooter online and takes a minimal amount of effort to get started. It's a great version of the game, but how about getting your Quake 2 on with no effort on your part other than opening a web browser and typing in an address? A trio of bored Google engineers have ported id's fragfest to HTML5 (no plugin required) just to show what new browser technology is capable of [via Kotaku]:

The only downside is, even though HTML5 is widely recognized as a coming new standard in 2010, it's only currently available on top-notch browsers like the desktop versions of Apple's Safari and Google's Chrome. The point is, it may be a little while before you're able to play on your brand-spankin' new iPad. Bummer!
