Nintendo started releasing some of its big retail games as digital downloads in tbe 3DS eShop store, but that 2GB card that comes with the hardware could fill up fast.
Nintendo uses its own weird metric for measuring capacity. Basically, 8 blocks is equivalent to 1 MB. We paid attention while downloading Paper Mario: Sticker Star from the 3DS eShop and discovered it weighs in at about 4,200 blocks, which translates to about 525 MBs.
New Super Mario Bros. 2 kicked off the big eShop releases for Nintendo, and that game is about 370 MBs. Now bigger games like Super Mario 3D Land, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Mario Kart 7, and Star Fox 64 3D are all available for download. So, anyone that may go download-happy may find their SD card filled to the brim.
Thankfully, huge SD cards are very cheap, Amazon has a 16 GB card for around $11. That’s eight times the storage space. Transferring your old contents to a new SD card is a breeze as well. You can just copy and paste the contents of the old card onto a PC and then copy that on the new card. Also, the 3DS XL comes with a 4GB card, which is probably enough space for most gamers.
