Mike Minton doesn’t fit the mold of the typical tech executive.
It’s been a year since Minton took over as Twitch’s chief product officer in July 2025, following a five-year stint as the company’s chief monetization officer. The product role is a natural fit for Minton, bringing together his career-long passion for software engineering with his identity as a self-described “degenerate gamer.” But his professional journey began in a very different place: the U.S. Marine Corps, where Minton participated in the liberation of Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm while serving between 1990 and 2004.
“It was three weeks of very intense, very little sleep — a lot of stuff going on,” Minton said in a podcast interview with GamesBeat. “Obviously, when you go through an experience like that, it really hardens you in some ways.”
In May, Minton traveled to Los Angeles for GamesBeat Summit, where he spoke on a panel moderated by GamesBeat lead news writer Alexander Lee (AKA yours truly). After the panel, we sat down to record an episode of the BIG Show, GamesBeat’s podcast exploring gaming industry leaders’ opinions and career stories in a candid, after-hours environment. Our 27-minute discussion covered a wide range of topics, including Twitch’s ongoing evolution as a creator platform, our mutual love for the University of Michigan Wolverines, and Minton’s thoughts on the growing social trend of clipping, which Minton said he believed was currently “a little bit over-toasted.”
