Nintendo revealed in an updated FAQ on its support website that it plans to discontinue sales of the original Switch in Europe in less than a year. This move comes as it plans to launch a new version of the Switch 2 with a replaceable battery, in compliance with EU regulations. The Switch Lite and the Switch OLED will be similarly phased out starting in February 2027.

The specific page on the support site is titled, “Information about upcoming battery-related revisions to some Nintendo products.” It details how the company plans to roll out the revised products with user-replaceable batteries beginning soon, including the Switch 2, the Joy-Con 2 and the Joy-Con among other controllers.

The support page mostly focuses on the new Switch 2 model, but the FAQ at the bottom addresses the issue of other Nintendo hardware without replaceable batteries. Underneath a list that includes the Switch, the Switch Lite and the Switch Lite OLED among other devices, it says, “Nintendo will no longer offer the above-named products on Nintendo Store after mid-February 2027.”

Further down the FAQ, Nintendo says: “From mid-February 2027, almost ten years after Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017, Nintendo will no longer sell to retailers hardware in the Nintendo Switch family of systems – specifically Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite and Nintendo Switch – OLED Model. Sales of Nintendo Switch hardware on Nintendo Store will also end in mid-February 2027.”

Nintendo notes that the original Switch’s online and eShop functionalities will remain untouched for the foreseeable future.
