Sound is one of the features of gameplay that often goes under-recognized — unless it somehow intrudes on the gamer’s experience, or is “bad.” Only then do most gamers recognize it, but audio design is one of the fundamental pillars of immersive game design for that very reason. However, as audio studio Embody discovered, the artistic vision of audio designers can often hit a wall in the form of headphones, which can often deliver an underwhelming version of the planned design.
Embody has worked with multiple studios to bring these audio designs to life. Its Immerse Gaming spatial audio feature has launched for games such as Call of Duty, The Witcher 3, Final Fantasy XIV and Cyberpunk 2077. The additions to each title tout such things as “a sharpened sense of depth and realism” (The Witcher 3) and the ability to “experience every in-game sound effect in 360 degrees with depth and height, using any pair of headphones” (Final Fantasy XIV).
