Tomb Raider streaming show coming to Amazon’s Prime Video

Amazon’s Prime Video announced it a new series based on the iconic Tomb Raider video game franchise as part of a deal between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios.

The series will be written and produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge and will premiere exclusively on Prime Video (which generated more than 65 million viewers for its Fallout streaming series) in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

This news comes after Crystal Dynamics and Amazon Games previously announced a collaboration to develop and publish a new multiplatform Tomb Raider video game. The as-yet untitled game is a single-player, narrative-driven adventure that will add a new chapter to Lara Croft’s story in the Tomb Raider series. It’s another example of the marriage of Hollywood and Games, which we’ll be talking about next week at our GamesBeat Summit 2024 event. (You can get 25% off tickets with this code: gbs24dean25).

Tomb Raider is a property of Embracer Freemode, part of the Embracer Group, and it is also actively licensing The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit for games and other projects, based on our three-hour interview with Embracer Freemode CEO Lee Guinchard.

“With great IP, the possibilities are endless. The richness and depth of the fiction allows the Tomb Raider series from Prime Video and the video game from Amazon Games to tell separate stories about Lara Croft’s adventures,” said Christoph Hartmann, VP of Amazon Games, in a statement. ”We’re honored that Crystal Dynamics has entrusted Amazon with this iconic franchise, and we’re looking forward to seeing where this collaboration takes us.”

Tomb Raider: Game of the Year Edition.

The companies will share more about both projects as they progress. In the meantime, Amazon Prime members can claim Tomb Raider: Game of the Year Edition on PC via GOG, available throughout May.
