Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 lands just short of the U.K. top 10 despite a troubled launch

It might come a surprise, but not everyone listens to game reviewers.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 has received a critical mauling from the gaming press, with the PlayStation 4 version sitting on a Metacritic score of just 34.  But that hasn’t stopped fans from going out and buying the latest entry in the long-running skating series. It debuted at No. 12 in this week’s U.K. all-formats retail chart, reports MCV.

Pro Skater 5, which launched on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One with PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions to follow, was just two places behind another big recent release, the movie tie-in Mad Max. It’s a minor victory for Pro Skater 5 given its poor critical reception, and it shows there’s still a lot of love for the famous franchise.

GamesRadar was particularly critical of Pro Skater 5’s production quality given its full retail price, saying, “If Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 were a budget game, I’d have a hard time recommending it to anyone. At full retail price, it’s a disgrace.” Metro GameCentral said that it’s “a sad, pathetic end to a classic games franchise.”

Publisher Activision has apologized for some of the bugs and glitches plaguing Pro Skater 5, and it’s working with developer Robomodo to fix some of them.

Meanwhile, new toys-to-life game Lego Dimensions had a strong debut week, hitting second place in the chart. It’s the strongest toys-to-life retail launch this year and the third best to date, behind Skylanders Giants and Skylanders Swap Force.

Here’s how the U.K. all-formats retail chart looks for the week ending October 2:

  1. FIFA 16 (EA)
  2. Lego Dimensions (Warner Bros)
  3. NBA 2K16 (2K Games)
  4. Destiny: The Taken King (Activision Blizzard)
  5. Forza Motorsport 6 (Microsoft)
  6. Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer (Nintendo)
  7. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (Konami)
  8. Skylanders Superchargers (Activision Blizzard)
  9. Grand Theft Auto V (Rockstar)
  10. Mad Max (Warner Bros)
