Blizzard is revealing the next World of Warcraft expansion at Gamescom

The World of Warcraft is about to get a bit bigger.

Blizzard announced today that it’ll reveal the next major expansion for its popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game at the Gamescom conference, which takes place in Cologne, Germany from August 6 through August 9. The announcement will come on August 6 at 9 a.m. Pacific.

This will be World of Warcraft’s sixth expansion. The fifth, Warlords of Draenor, came out in November 2014. The release of the expansion ballooned the game’s subscriber base to 10 million, but it’s now back down to 7.1 million. Such rises and dips are normal for expansions releases and the period that comes after them. Players are always happy to return to check out new content.

At its peak in 2010, World of Warcraft had 12 million subscribers. It’s still far ahead of its competition, most of which don’t even bother with subscription models and opt for free-to-play services instead.
