World of Warcraft’s subscribers shrink to 7.1 million

Some people are beginning to abandon Draenor.

Publisher Activision announced in its earnings report today that World of Warcraft’s subscription numbers have dropped to 7.1 million. The number was up to around 10 million after November’s launch of the online game’s fifth expansion, Warlords of Draenor, but this drop brings it back to per-expansion levels, which were around 7.4 million.

A drop like this isn’t too unusual a few months after an expansion hits. Casual players will get bored with the new content, and even consistent subscribers can get tired waiting for new patches to bring them more bosses to fight and loot to earn. At its peak in 2010, Warcraft had 12 million subscribers. It’s low was 6.8 million around August of last year.

Activision said in its report that World of Warcraft is still the No. 1 subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game in the world
