Wizards of the Coast and Invoke Studios revealed the first gameplay for its upcoming action-adventure game, Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, at today’s Gamescom Opening Night Live event. The new trailer shows protagonist Kaatri’s relationship with Tasha, the ancient witch queen who grants her power. The game is scheduled for release in 2027.
The gameplay showcase shows off more of Kaatri’s warlock powers, which primarily allow her to see raw magic in Darkon, the world around her. She can use various spells, many of them familiar to Dungeons & Dragons players, to navigate the world around her, solve puzzles and battle monsters. She can also control the environment around her with her Tasha-given abilities, up to and including being able to control the weather.
We received more information about the game during a pre-Gamescom preview, including that Kaatri’s motivated by the search for someone “dear to her.” She’ll travel with various companions, and that players will be able to customize Kaatri by tailoring the spells that Tasha — who’s played by Maggie Robertson, the actress who played Lady Dimitrescu and Orin the Red — gives her.
Kaatri herself is played by Tricia Helfer, of Battlestar Galactica, Lucifer and Mass Effect fame. She plays the role of a Pact of the Blade warlock, someone who can blend magical and martial combat. The developers noted that, unlike fellow D&D adventure Baldur’s Gate 3, there will be no dice-rolling mechanics within Warlock.
