Trion World’s Trove passes 1 million active players — but it’s not a Minecraft clone, CEO says

It’s treasure for Trove.

Developer Trion World announced today that it’s voxel-based online role-playing game, Trove, now has over 1 million active users. Trove launches for PC on July 9 as a free-to-play game available on Steam, although players could buy extra content like new classes and equipment.

At first glance, Trove might look a lot like the block-based megahit Minecraft, but Scott Hartsman, the chief executive officer of Trion Worlds, explained the differences to GamesBeat. “While a lot of Minecraft is about building, mining, crafting, and modding, Trove is very intentionally a game about the combat, the loot, the exploration, the collecting, the advancement, and the global community,” he said. “Both games are great at very different things. It was important to us to make a game that stands on its own.”

Trion Worlds is planning to support Trove with additional content. “The Trove team has a brilliant roadmap of more features, content, classes, platforms, and more on the way,” Hartsman said. “We’re expanding the systems that are already in-game, adding even more things to do, and also working toward getting Trove in front of an even larger global audience.”
