Nintendo today held its summer Direct showcase today, in which it revealed more details about its upcoming Switch and Switch 2 titles. As is typical of these showcases, it saved the biggest announcement for the final moments of the show. In this case, it’s a remake of one of Nintendo’s most important and influential games of all time… The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Not only did Nintendo confirm the existence of the long-rumored remake, but it also gave a tentative release date of 2026. Presumably this means that Nintendo plans to reveal more about the game in the upcoming months, including a precise release date.
Almost every other game revealed during the summer games showcase bonanza is stacking up by early October, the better to not compete with Grand Theft Auto VI. But if any game could compete with GTA, it would probably be Ocarina of Time.
The trailer is purely cinematic, detailing the folklore behind the Great Deku Tree and Link, the boy living in the Kokiri village. The symbol of the Triforce also appears on the back of his hand as he sleeps, presumably having his prophetic dream of Princess Zelda.
