Real-time strategy games are back, as evidenced by today’s launch from Frost Giant Studios of Stormgate: Campaign One — Ashes of Earth.
Frost Giant Studios has launched its game on the PC, starting with its first full campaign alongside 1v1 multiplayer and vs. AI modes, custom games, and early looks at co-op and the editor.
Frost Giant Studios, the independent development team founded by real-time strategy veterans Tim Morten (StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void) and Tim Campbell (Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne), released the game on Steam today.
This official launch marks a major milestone for the studio’s debut game, signaling its evolution beyond Early Access with the arrival of the game’s first full campaign.
“Stormgate’s launch is a proud moment for all of us at Frost Giant. Our Ashes of Earth campaign is the product of years of hard work, player feedback, and genuine love for RTS,” said Tim Morten, CEO and Production Director at Frost Giant Studios, in a statement. “We stand on the shoulders of giants, and as it was with the great games that inspired us, we know the road to greatness only starts with the first campaign. We invite players to join us as we continue building Stormgate into something truly special.”
Stormgate, available to download for free on Steam, is a free-to-play real-time strategy game that fuses some of the genre’s most beloved traditions with modern improvements, powered by Unreal Engine 5 and Frost Giant’s proprietary SnowPlay technology.
The interesting thing about the journey is that when the company launched the game into early access, players didn’t like it. They didn’t like the art and felt like it fell short of the StarCraft-like expectation they had. So Morten told me in an earlier interview that the team went back to work, remade the art and pretty much delivered the game that players wanted.

Stormgate delivers many hours of entertainment to players for free, including three free campaign missions and access to a variety of completely free game modes. A variety of bundle options are available offering discounts to players who want to enjoy exploring more RTS game content while supporting the Frost Giant team.
These options include the complete Ashes of Earth campaign on its own ($25 in the in-game store), or one of three Steam bundles that include a mix of story, cosmetics, and playable heroes for the game modes that support them. The Ultimate Edition bundle ($65) comes jam-packed with all the gameplay content available on launch day, including all six purchasable heroes, the full Ashes of Earth campaign, an adorable chicken pet, and the Firestorm fog of war shader.
Stormgate’s August 5 launch is only the beginning. Major updates and features, including the release of the much-anticipated Team Mayhem 3v3 mode, will be coming to Sigma Labs later this year.
