Final Fantasy XIV’s latest update offers plenty of nostalgia for longtime fans.
Patch 2.51 adds the Gold Saucer to the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (which is out for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC). The Gold Saucer originally appeared in Final Fantasy VII, where it was a mix between a casino and an arcade. One of its most popular features, Chocobo racing, is back for the Final Fantasy XIV version. The patch also brings the card game Triple Triad, which was a popular side-activity in Final Fantasy VIII.
While Final Fantasy XIV is about to get its first expansion this spring, titled Heavensward, patch 2.51 is a free content update. The expansion will increase the level cap to 60, add new Jobs (advanced character classes), include a new playable race, allow players to build airships, and continue the story.
Final Fantasy XIV was originally a disaster when it came out in 2010. Square Enix remade much of the game and relaunched it as A Realm Reborn in 2013. It has since become a critical and commercial success, with more than two million accounts registered for the MMO as of last April.
