The web-slinger is back on consoles thanks to Sony.
PlayStation 4 is getting Spider-Man from developer Insomniac Games, the makers of the successful Ratchet & Clank games. Sony, which owns the film rights to the Spider-Man character, is working with Marvel on this game — and Marvel has confirmed the game is only on PlayStation 4. Sony and Marvel did not announce a release date at this evening’s Sony event for the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles.
For now, Sony’s new Great Responsiblity simulator only has the working title of Spider-Man PS4, but we can already see that it’s shaping up to take on a similar feel to the classic games featuring Peter Parker that won over games on the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube.
Creative director Bryan Intihar later said it was a open-world game and not based on the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming movie.

Spider-Man has had a shaky history in the world of gaming. Spider-Man 2, which was based on the film of the same name from 2004, was a hit in its own right, nailing the sensation of swinging through the streets of New York City as the young hero. Since then, developers have not had much luck re-creating that magic.
From the looks of the trailer, Sony wants to nail the gameplay fans remember from Spider-Man 2. If it does, it could have a big new Marvel exclusive to go along with its Sony Pictures film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, should the game get a 2017 release date.
