Sony testing a web-based PlayStation store for movies & games

Sony quietly launched a web-based version of its PlayStation digital media store today although the company has yet to make an official announcement.

The store, officially called the Sony Entertainment Network Store, offers customers a selection of movies, television shows, and games. The digital pricing looks nearly identical to what’s offered in Sony’s PlayStation console store, and you can pay via credit card, PayPal, or gift cards.

All the content you purchase from the store is available across Sony devices like your PlayStation 3, PSP, PS Vita, laptops, and so on.

The new store, which appears to be in testing mode, acts in direct competition with Microsoft’s Xbox media store, and it should bring new competition to the likes of iTunes and Amazon in a lesser capacity. But with it being a late entrant in the digital media store business, the real question is whether Sony can hope to achieve the same level of success as the aforementioned competitors.
