Sandbox VR announced today that it is creating and launching a new immersive location-based VR experience. This one, created in collaboration with Netflix, is set in the Stranger Things universe, called Stranger Things: Catalyst. It’s set to launch later this year, to coincide with the launch of the fifth season of the Stranger Things show.
When players visit a Sandbox VR location, they can visit locations from the show’s setting of Hawkins and battle creatures of the Upside Down with supernatural abilities. Sandbox’s locations use motion-tracking technology and haptics that track the player’s entire body, allowing them to enter the setting of Stranger Things in a physical space.
Sandbox VR has previously worked on Netflix adaptations in the form of Squid Games Virtuals and the VR adaptation of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon. The company announced earlier this year that it had passed $200 million in lifetime sales and opened up almost 150 stores, with 29 more planned to open before the end of the year.
Steve Zhao, Sandbox VR founder and CEO, said in a statement, “The success of our previous Netflix collaborations has shown us the incredible potential of bringing beloved content into virtual reality. Stranger Things, with its rich universe of supernatural phenomena and compelling characters, provides the perfect foundation for a truly groundbreaking VR experience. Our technology will allow fans to physically step into the story they’ve watched unfold over the past seasons, creating thrilling memories with friends as they face the horrors of the Upside Down together.”
