Rovio partners with DreamWorks for another licensed smartphone game

The Croods

Licensed games of movies continue to find a home on smartphones and tablets as Angry Birds developer Rovio partners with DreamWorks Animation for a second time.

The Angry Birds creator revealed today that it will release a new game based on DreamWorks’ upcoming caveman film The Croods. The title should hit iOS and Android globally on March 14.

“DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods is filled with wonderful characters and creatures in an incredibly detailed, inventive world — it was just begging for its very own mobile game!” Rovio executive vice president of games Petri Järvilehto said in a statement. “It’s been an incredible experience having our two teams working closely together on extending the story to mobile platforms.”

The developer released the following teaser trailer, which doesn’t feature any gameplay:

Rovio previously released Angry Birds Rio, a game that tied its popular physics title with DreamWorks’ animated film Rio.

“Rovio set the industry standard in mobile gaming with Angry Birds, and we believe their massive community of active users will go wild for The Croods,” DreamWorks Animation head of global interactive Chris Hewish said. “We’ve developed a close and collaborative relationship with Rovio in which our world-class filmmakers created an incredible piece of custom animation on the home screen that introduces players to the game’s beautifully rich aesthetics.”

The Croods hits theaters on March 22. It tells the story of Earth’s first road trip as family of cavemen hit the trail to find a new home after a cataclysmic event destroys their cave.
