Reviews Spotlight: Mario Kart, matryoshka dolls, and Mass Effect 2

As always, the Reviews Spotlight gathers the week's most evocative reviews for your personal edification. Don't read too fast, though…I say anything involving sexy, zombie-slaying nuns should be savored.

Hot, kinky, and deadly lesbian nuns, anyone?
By Daav Puke
Twin Blades is a game about (you guessed it!) a sexually deviant sister of the Lord. With her native town of Jalombe under siege by brain-hungry zombies, Sister Angelika leaves her abbey — armed to the teeth — with the aim of restoring God's intended peace.

Now, I've never seen a nun tear the limbs off of a mindless zombie with a scythe, but then again, my memory of Revelations is a bit rusty. Regardless, if Daav's review is any indication, Twin Blades is more about blood and gore than biblical proverbs and rosary beads.

Mass Effect 2 is a disappointing sequel
By Richard Bywater
The Illusive Man
Like any good Mass Effect fan, I'm wary of people who blaspheme BioWare's RPG opus. So after seeing the title to Richard's article, I began rolling up my sleeves in preparation of the Internet fight that would inevitably erupt.

Lo and behold, Richard's article not only defused my nerd rage, but it just about convinced me that Mass Effect 2 doesn't measure up to its predecessor.

There's nothing quite like stacking
By Jack Wilde
Jack wants you to know one thing: Stacking is fun. You'll continue to do a million other things today: drive, drink coffee, head to work, eat, etc. But whatever happens, remember that Stacking is great!

Stacking

So what is Stacking? The best way to describe this downloadable game is to merely mention that it was developed by Double Fine Productions, the guys behind Psychonauts and Brütal Legend. So you can expect the same characteristic humor and charm which seems to come packaged in every Double Fine game.

Charlie Blackmore, the smallest in a group of Russian matryoshka dolls, takes center stage in a mission to save his older siblings and, in the same blow, end child labor! Interesting, isn't it? Check out Jack's full review at the link above.

Coming in 3 laps late: Super Mario Kart review
By Daav Puke
Super Mario Kart has stood the test of time and remains one of the few games whose radiant charm and intuitive controls demand utter adulation from players. We're all aware of this game's greatness; hell, most of us were raised behind the wheel of those little go-karts.

Daav believes he's discovered a new angle to Super Mario Kart. Through the power of retrospection, this Bitmobber is giving new life to a two-decade-old discourse. Join the conversation and comment away!

Please knock me out, so I can retire: Punch-Out!! (Wii)
By Ryan Conway
If you've ever complained about writing a high school or university paper, hush up and take a cue from Ryan Conway. This devoted reviewer prepared a 3,000-word treatise on Punch-Out!! for the Wii — all out of love for the game. Needless to say, it's thorough as hell.

Curious about the 20-year transition of the Punch-Out!! franchise? Wondering what the story is behind Mac, the ever-silent protagonist? Ryan's review answers every question, save one: how to stop playing.

APOXAPOX: Upon your review!
By Daav Puke
Daav makes his third appearance on this week's Reviews Spotlight, putting pressure on the now-famous Ryan Conway to step up his game.

The title in question is APOX — a bizarre cocktail which blends a first-person shooter with a real-time strategy. Few developers have mastered that concoction, but India's BlueGiant Interactive takes on the challenge. Does it succeed? Daav explains.
