Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth numbered entry and thirteenth mainline game in the 30-year-old series, debuted as the best-selling game of 2026 in February, according to industry-tracking firm Circana. It was the best-selling game across PlayStation, Xbox and PC storefronts, likely helping contribute to a 1% increase in content spending year-over-year.

“Resident Evil: Requiem’s blockbuster debut and a 27% boost in subscription services helped US consumer spending on video game content stay flat when compared to February 2025,” said Mat Piscatella, Circana’s senior director of video game reports. In hardware, while Nintendo Switch 2 hardware drove 22% year-on-year spending growth compared to last February, it was PlayStation 5 that once again led the market in both unit and dollar sales.”

Requiem’s success is likely down to Resident Evil’s longstanding reputation on the market, with several well-received games having launched in the last few years. Its marketing campaign, including the touted return of fan-favorite character Leon and the duality of the two-protagonist system, also probably helped boost its profile. The report notes that Requiem’s launch week dollar sales were over 60% higher than predecessor Village.

In addition to Resident Evil Requiem, Circana says that non-mobile subscription spending rose, offsetting other declines. Accessory spending fell by -2% compared with last February, while PlayStation, Switch and Xbox series spending saw declines offset by spending on the Nintendo Switch 2.

As noted above, Resident Evil Requiem topped the February charts — according to Circana’s platform breakdowns, it was the #1 seller on PC, PlayStation and Xbox, and #6 on Nintendo. It also appears on both the main chart and the Nintendo charts twice, the other time being the Resident Evil Generation Pack, a bundle of Requiem, Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village.

It was not the only game with an impressive showing in February. Diablo II: Resurrected made one of the biggest comebacks in recent memory, jumping from 195th place to 13th. This is likely thanks to Blizzard launching a surprise update to the game last month, adding the Warlock class before it did the same for Diablo IV and Diablo Immortal.

One final surprise is not on the main bestseller chart, but on the PC-specific list. DOOM: The Dark Ages rose from 92nd place on the list to 9th, which Circana attributes to Steam’s id Software Anniversary Sale in February.

February’s other new successes

A few other new games appeared on the bestseller list, not including Requiem and the Generation Pack. Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined, the remake of the original RPG, debuted in ninth place and was the only other game besides Requiem to make it onto the year-to-date chart (see below). It was also the second-best-selling game on Nintendo platforms, and the tenth-best on PC.

God of War: Sons of Sparta and Mario Tennis Fever were the two new platform exclusives to make it onto the list, also making the bestseller lists on their platforms (PlayStation and Nintendo, respectively). The other new game on the list, arena fighter My Hero Academia: All’s Justice, didn’t make any platform list, but likely got a boost in popularity thanks to being part of a popular anime/manga IP.

This is the first year-to-date sales chart Circana has produced in 2026, and there are already interesting changes. Resident Evil Requiem has made the expected splash, landing at the top of the list.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has jumped onto both the monthly and year-to-date charts, possibly thanks to its inclusion in the February PlayStation Plus catalog.
