Project Hail Mary is lighting up the stars on Hollywood with its blockbuster Ryan Gosling movie, based on Andy Weir’s great sci-fi novel.

And now it’s going into mixed reality. Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars puts fans inside an entirely new chapter of the story, blending AR and VR to make the Hail Mary mission something you experience.

It’s launching globally on major mixed reality and VR platforms in late 2026, and it’s coming from Lond-based Maze Theory, which made the Peaky Blinders: The King’s Ransom and Doctor Who: The Edge of Time. The Gosling movie has generated $433 million at the box office worldwide.

Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars; a brand new mixed reality game developed in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios, featuring an entirely new, original chapter developed in collaboration with Andy Weir specifically for the game.

A nice piece of trivia from Jason Schreier’s book on Blizzard Entertainment: Weir had a job as a game tester but was fired from the position because he didn’t fit into the crunch culture at the game company.

Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars goes somewhere completely new. Player’s step into the role of Ryland Grace at a pivotal, untold moment in the Hail Mary mission. The ship’s systems are failing. Deep space grows increasingly uncertain. Using mixed reality, the Hail Mary itself bleeds into the player’s physical environment.

They reach out to diagnose the problem, improvise the fix, and push the limits of what science and engineering can do under pressure. Humanity’s last hope is in the player’s hands.

At the heart of the experience is Rocky, the alien intelligence whose partnership with Grace defines the film’s emotional core. In Project Hail Mary: Journey Among the Stars, that bond isn’t something you watch develop. You build it yourself, through cooperation, problem-solving, and evolving trust. It is, as Weir intended, a story about the first true friendship between species, and mixed reality makes that feel real in an entirely new way.

Project Hail Mary author, Weir, said in a statement, “Since creating Project Hail Mary a few years ago, fans have been waiting for more. This is the first step outside of what happens in the book and movie, something you can only experience in mixed reality.”

Maze Theory’s CEO Phil White said in a statement,: “Project Hail Mary is one of those rare stories that captures something genuinely human, curiosity, connection, the will to keep going against impossible odds. Mixed reality lets us put the player right at the heart of that. This isn’t a companion piece. It’s a whole new story, worth telling in its own right.”

Maze Theory’s Chief Creative Officer, Russ Harding, said a statement, “We’re creating a deeply personal journey defined by discovery — and an immersive bond with Rocky that is only possible in mixed reality. That’s what this medium does that nothing else can.”

The game was first unveiled (to a closed group) at the official Project Hail Mary world premiere, hosted by Amazon MGM Studios at AMC Lincoln Square, in New York.
