OK, Sony, you've totally confused me: Handheld platforms are the wave of the future, the PlayStation 3 is riddled with security holes, and you want us to buy your shiny new gadget. But a more important element to consider is this: Will it blend?
News Blips:
Sony announces the successor to the PlayStation Portable. Codenamed Next Generation Portable, the handheld boasts a plethora of tantalizing doodads and features that'll make your mother stop cringing at Dead Space 2 and start worrying about your expensive tastes. As we hinted before, the device comes equipped with dual analog sticks, front and rear touchpads, and Sixaxis motion control. It also supports 3G and WiFi, presumably to give users maximum flexibility in Tweeting to their friends how awesome they look while holding an obsidian-colored gift from the gods. San Francisco Giants relief pitcher Brian "Fear the Beard" Wilson will debut and star in a short skit endorsing Major League Baseball 2K11. Wilson, whose facial hair garnered a cult following as much as his on-screen antics during last year's World Series, will personally introduce the first film in the series on the Lopez Tonight TV show later this evening, challenging the notion that successful baseball players aren't somewhat crazy. Publisher 2K Sports also announced the return of its "Perfect your Game" contest on April 1, which dares gamers to pitch a verified perfect game for a whopping $1,000,000 prize. MLB 2K11 is expected to release on March 8 for the Xbox 360, PS3, PSP, Wii, and PC systems.
Magicka sells 30,000 units in its first day. Arrowhead Game Studios' satirical action-adventure managed to climb ahead of Dead Space 2 to secure the top spot in Steam's software sales charts. Priced at $9.99, the game combines a Norse mythology backdrop with hilarious dialogue and a complex spell combination system. "It's gone way past our expections," said Magicka director and Arrowhead Chief Executive Officer Johan Pilestedt to Gamasutra. "We've got a great response from the community. It's exceeded our expectations by far." A game that allows creative freedom while exploding goblins wholeheartedly deserves this level of success.
Crysis 2 developer Crytek wants to test your Nanosuit skills by participating in the multiplayer demo this weekend. Twenty-one of the most rough-and-tumble members of Crytek's development team will appear on Xbox Live this Saturday from 3 pm to 6 pm PST to punish anyone foolish enough to stray into their crosshairs…which could be a good or bad thing if you're teamed up with them or not. If you feel up to rolling with the big boys, send a game invite or friend request to any of the Gamertags below. Good luck!
