ModRetro announced today that it has rolled out a new feature for Tetris on its handheld gaming console, the Chromatic. Players who already have Tetris on their Chromatics can download the update via ModRetro’s Cart Clinic feature. They can then use link cables to connect their handhelds to other Chromatics with Tetris and face off in battle.

Battle Mode was included in the original release of Tetris on Game Boy, allowing players to send garbage lines at their opponents that make their stacks harder to clear. It’s a fast-paced mode, and it’s free for all players who have Tetris. ModRetro launched the Chromatic with Tetris as a bundled title.

ModRetro first revealed the Chromatic last year, as a handheld compatible with Game Boy cartridges, and pixel-accurate to the original console. The company, founded by Oculus creator Palmer Luckey, launched the console last year and most recently restocked in July.

Cart Clinic is an updater feature in ModRetro’s firmware tools, allowing players to update their game cartridges with updates and bug fixes. Users download fixes from PC to Chromatic via USB cable. Battle Mode can be downloaded via this feature.
