Modern Warfare 2 map pack shatters PlayStation Network download records

Activision Blizzard announced today that it has sold more than 1 million copies of the downloadable map pack for the latest Modern Warfare game on the PlayStation Network.

The Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 game has been the bestselling game of all time since its launch in November. A follow-on map pack, the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 Stimulus Package, has sold more than 17 million units at $15 a piece. Now the PlayStation Network version has also sold more than a million units.

Although there is turmoil at Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward, where the parent company fired the game studio’s co-founders, sales of the Stimulus package on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live have broken all records. The fact that gamers are playing map packs and extending their multiplayer gaming for a longer period may explain why sales of new games have been week, according to analyst Michael Pachter at Wedbush Morgan.
