4A Games showed off a new trailer for its upcoming game, Metro 2039, at Gamescom’s Opening Night Live event, which reveals more about the increasingly more depressing world of the Metro, as well as the protagonist, the mysterious Stranger. It also gives a preview of the gameplay and in-game weapons.
The story/gameplay trailer reveals more about the Stranger, and his battle against the Novoreich, the new oppressive regime created by former Spartan Hunter. According to the trailer, the game takes place in a Metro station called Sevastopolkskaya, as well as the remains of Moscow above-ground. In addition to the Stranger and the Novoreich, the trailer also shows the return of the sinister Dark Ones, strange shadow creatures that have haunted the periphery of the franchise since Metro 2033.
Metro 2039 has a newly-announced release window of February 2027 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. 4A also revealed that the Collector’s Edition of the game comes with a Spartan helmet, which would also be available to view on the Gamescom show floor.
