Konami adds an insurance microtransaction to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Konami is taking inspiration from the world of free-to-play games by adding an new paid-for insurance scheme to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Konami is launching the Metal Gear Online multiplayer mode for The Phantom Pain in a major update today. It’s also launching an insurance scheme that protects any in-game assets stolen by rival players during infiltrations into your forward operating base (FOB) — an existing player-versus-player aspect of the open-world action game. This insurance scheme sounds similar to the shield mechanic used in mobile-strategy games like Clash of Clans, where players can spend premium currency to protect their bases from attack for a period of time.
