In one of the year’s more predictable swerves, video game sales in the U.S. have dropped year-over-year as of this June, according to industry-tracking firm Circana. The 21% drop is largely driven by comparison to June 2025, the launch month of the Switch 2, one of the best-selling consoles of all time.
| June 2026 Dollar Sales, Millions | June 2025 | June 2026 | Change |
| Total Video Game Sales (Projected to Total Market) | $5,692 | $4,495 | -21% |
| Video Game Content (Physical & Digital Full Game, DLC/MTX and Subscription consumer spending across Console, Cloud, Mobile*, Portable, PC and VR platforms) | $4,398 | $3,880 | -12% |
| Video Game Hardware | $1,000 | $383 | -62% |
| Video Game Accessories | $294 | $232 | -21% |
“June 2025 featured the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, which set an all-time US video game hardware launch month sales record of 1.6 million units,” said Mat Piscatella, Circana’s senior director of video game reports. “Nintendo Switch 2’s June 2025 debut also drove the highest hardware and accessory spending totals for a June month in US tracked history.”
Not only does the console’s anniversary result in a dip in hardware sales, but all game sales overall. The Switch 2’s launch month saw a 6% increase in game content sales, so a 12% dip one year later is perhaps not unreasonable. Accessory sales rose and fell to an almost similar degree year-over-year, 29% and 21%, respectively.
| Year-to-Date 2025 Dollar Sales, Millions | YTD 2025 | YTD 2026 | Change |
| Total Video Game Sales (Projected to Total Market) | $27,731 | $27,492 | -1% |
| Video Game Content (Physical & Digital Full Game, DLC/MTX and Subscription consumer spending across Console, Cloud, Mobile*, Portable, PC and VR platforms) | $24,309 | $24,314 | 0% |
| Video Game Hardware | $2,152 | $1,966 | -9% |
| Video Game Accessories | $1,270 | $1,211 | -5% |
But comparison is not the thief of all joy, as June 2026 saw a few games breaking the top 10 bestseller charts. Meccha Chameleon, in particular, was the notable breakout success. Circana’s report also notes that subscription spending was the only content segment to grow in June, having gone up by 7%.

June put fewer new games on the chart than previous months, but the three games are diverse offering. On the one hand, you have UFC 6, the latest entry in a popular triple-A EA Sports franchise. On the other hand, you have indie hit Meccha Chameleon, which Circana predicts sold over 4 million copies. The third game is Star Fox 2026, the remake of Fox McCloud’s debut adventure; which was also the number-one bestseller on Nintendo platforms.

The year-to-date bestseller list has changed little in June, with no new games joining the list. The ranks have also not shifted much, with the only real change being that NBA 2K26 has made it back onto the list, displacing Call of Duty: Black Ops 7.
