Google Play Gift Cards

Google Play gift cards coming to Target and GameStop

Google Play Gift Cards

Good news for people who have no interest in putting thought into a birthday present for their tech savvy, anti-Apple friends: Google officially announced that it’ll start selling Google Play gift cards in a handful of retail stores.

Along with the recently released Google-branded Nexus 7 tablet, the new gift cards are likely part of the search giants’ strategy to boost digital media sales via the Google Play store, which directly competes with Amazon and Apple’s iTunes store.

Photos of the gift cards leaked online last week, as VentureBeat previously reported. The company is releasing the cards in increments of $15, $25, and $50, which will be available at Target, GameStop, and Radio Shack retail chains across the country. However, I’d imagine we’ll start to see the new gift cards in other stores prior to the holiday shopping season.

And much like other gift cards, the full amount can be added to a Google Play account, where you can then purchase things like ebooks, music, apps, and games. Unfortunately, you can’t use Google Play for magazine and other Android app subscriptions, according to the company.
