I hope you saved your many PlayStation Move controllers, because the motion device is compatible with the PlayStation 4. At the same time, you can throw your DualShock 3 pads into a drawer, because the next-gen console has no use for them.
Yesterday, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that the PlayStation 3 controllers will not work with the company’s next system, according to IGN. The PlayStation 4 comes with a DualShock 4, which features a touchpad, a Move-like light on the top, and the capability to sense motion on six different axes.
The PS4 is also without native backward compatibility with the PS3, which means Sony would have to manually add support for the older DualShock 3. It’s not going to do that … except for the Move wands.
It’s clear that Sony wants to continue with the same basic technology for its motion-controlled games, but many more people own DualShock 3s than Move controllers. It would have been a friendly move toward consumers to make the aging gamepad work in some multiplayer games.
Nintendo does this with its Wii controllers, which still work on the Wii U. Although, that console doesn’t really support multiple Wii U GamePads, so it is a slightly different situation.
