The sequel for a 3DS exclusive skips the portable in favor of a mobile release.
Developer Level-5 announced that Fantasy Life 2: Two Moons and the Village of God comes out this summer in Japan for iOS and Android smartphones, via Siliconera. The original Fantasy Life was a role-playing game that allowed players to live out different professions, like alchemy and fishing. The sequel will focus on town-building, similar to other mobile games like Simpsons: Tapped Out and Game of War: Fire Age.
The 3DS is a popular system, but the mobile market is huge and growing. It could reach $30 billion, with revenues expected to exceed the console industry’s this year, according to market researcher Newzoo.
Level-5 has brought one of its franchises to mobile before with 2012’s Layton Brothers: Mystery Room, a spin-off of the Professor Layton series. However, that game had little connection with the 3DS installments, while Fantasy Life 2 is a numbered sequel in its series. While it isn’t unusual to see franchises go to mobile, they don’t often release official sequels there as exclusives.
