The Esports Foundation (EF) has announced the wildcard slots mechanisms for the Esports Nations Cup 2026 (ENC) – Solidarity Slots, Host Region Slots, and Special Invites – introducing structured pathways to expand global nation-based esports competition while aiming to maintain competitive integrity.

The framework is designed to address structural, technical and regional barriers that can limit access to international competition, ensuring broader global representation across the ENC through clearly defined, criteria-based pathways, aligned with the overall competitive structure.

Solidarity Slots is designed to provide a structured, performance-based pathway for underrepresented countries and territories to compete at the ENC. Available across all titles except Counter-Strike 2, Solidarity Slots aims to provide a unique opportunity for players from countries and territories with a smaller esports footprint to be represented on ENC’s global stage, making the event relevant to more fans worldwide.

Starting July 20, 2026, countries and territories that have not qualified for more than one title already will be able to submit an application until August 17, 2026, to be considered for a solidarity slot in their strongest titles. The Esports Foundation and the respective publishers will then award the solidarity slot based on competitive strength and regional representation after all qualifiers across all game titles are concluded.

Host Nation Slots are commonly used in international sporting events to ensure local representation and to drive national fandom in the host country. The Esports Nations Cup aims at establishing a similar framework for its rotation model. However, for ENC 2026, the slot will be assigned to the host region instead of the host nation, ensuring representation from Gulf Cooperation Council member nations through a merit-based system across all game titles. Slots will be awarded to the highest-performing GCC nation that has not already qualified for the ENC through the existing qualification pathways.

Special Invites address specific technical or structural limitations that may prevent participation in standard qualification systems. Applied only to selected titles and defined scenarios, these invitations will not be performance-based and will be determined by eligibility criteria aligned with game partner ecosystems and game-specific operational requirements.

Special Invite and Solidarity Slot allocations for selected titles include:

  • Chess (2 Solidarity Slots)
  • EA SPORTS FC (5 Special Invites, 2 Solidarity Slots)
  • PUBG MOBILE (4 Special Invites, 1 Solidarity Slot)
  • Honor of Kings (1 Special Invite, 1 Solidarity Slot)
  • Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves (1 Special Invite, 1 Solidarity Slot)
  • Rocket League (2 Solidarity Slots)
  • All remaining titles, excluding Counter-Strike 2, will have 1 Solidarity Slot by default

“ENC is built around the idea that esports talent exists everywhere, and that more players should have the chance to chase the dream of representing their country on the world stage,” said Fabian Scheuermann, chief games officer at the Esports Foundation, in a press release.

He went on to say, “The framework introduced today is about opening that door to more countries and communities, so more players can experience what it means to compete at the highest level of competition. As esports continues to grow around the world, the ENC is creating new pathways for players to turn that dream into reality and inspire the next generation back home.”

Wildcard Slot participants will receive full travel and accommodation support and compete under the same player experience framework as all other qualified teams and players at the ENC Finals.
