Start slapping the ground and flinging your fecal matter, because Nintendo put a release date on the Donkey Kong Country Returns rerelease.
Nintendo plans to debut Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, the 3DS version of the under-appreciated Wii platformer, on May 24. Metroid Prime developer Retro Studios produced the original 2010 title, and Pilotwings Resort studio Monster Games is handling the port.
Donkey Kong Country Returns was a reboot of the popular Super Nintendo series, which was itself a reboot of the Donkey Kong arcade brand. So Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is a rerelease of a reboot of a reboot — video games!
Returns is a well-paying game with wonderful visuals, but it may have missed its audience on the Wii. The title is especially difficult, and many hardcore gamers had shoved the Wii aside by 2010 in favor of the HD consoles. Nintendo is certainly hopeful that 3DS owners are more receptive to the primate platformer.
