LOS ANGELES — Developer Crytek is flexing its graphical muscles for Microsoft’s next-gen console. The developer revealed gameplay for its Roman-era combat game Ryse: Son of Rome at the Xbox pre-E3 media briefing today.

The demonstration showed Roman officer — the player — leading an army in an attack against a castle-like encampment. The gameplay consisted of a mixture of real-time and button-prompt attacks. Crytek is clearly going for cinematic visuals.

“You will learn what it’s like to fight as a warrior and lead an army in the Roman army,” Crytek chief executive Cevat Yerli said.

Ryse was previously a first-person hack-and-slash title. It was rumored to work exclusively with Kinect. The game Crytek showed today used an Xbox One controller.
