The hit mobile game Clash Royale has announced — through a Broadway-style musical — that one of its cards, Furnace, will be evolving into a character.
It’s the first time a card has been both reworked and Evolved simultaneously, developer Supercell said. I had a nice chuckle at the notion of introducing a character via a musical. But hey, it’s a competititive world out there when it comes to getting attention. And attention is the first step in improving user acquisition.
To celebrate, Clash Royale has released The Evolution of Furnace – an animated, Broadway-style musical that captures Furnace’s long-awaited glow-up, transforming from a glorified oven into a fully-fledged, flaming character.
To give Furnace’s transformation the stage that it deserves, Clash Royale has partnered with award-winning Swedish composer Nils-Petter Ankarblom, Uncommon Stockholm, and Gizmo Animation Studio to create the animated musical.
The video begins with Furnace as an oven in a dark kitchen. As the musical unfolds, Furnace takes on a new form as an all-singing all-dancing character, transforming as the music hits its crescendo.
Previously, the Furnace card was very uncompetitive within Clash Royale. In its new reworked and evolved form, developers hope to promote active play of the Furnace card rather than the defensive style that static and spawning troops deliver.
Gabriel Caramelo, marketing lead for Clash Royale, said in a statement, “Furnace has been overlooked and underpowered for far too long. Now it’s getting the revamp it deserves, and for the first time, we’ve reworked a card while delivering its Evolution at the same time. And what better way to launch the new and improved Furnace’s, complete with arms, legs and a heart aching to dance, than a musical!”
