Microsoft announced today that it is bringing Xbox Cloud Gaming to (some) cars, specifically by partnering with LG Electronics. The latter plans to integrate Cloud Gaming into its webOS Automotive Content Platform (ACP), which allows certain internet-connected cars to stream games from the Xbox app.
One of the company’s most public initiatives is its desire to make every conceivable device an Xbox — or at least capable of streaming Xbox games and supporting a Bluetooth controller connection. The Xbox app within the ACP offers access to hundreds of games for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers, including Gears of War: Reloaded, Forza Horizon 5 and the upcoming The Outer Worlds 2.
This function works by adding the Xbox app to the in-car infotainment hub, which can be used by passengers while the car is in motion (provided the car has an automotive data plan). All they need in order to play games is a Bluetooth-compatible controller and an Xbox Game Pass subscription.
Chris Lee, VP of Xbox Marketing, said in an Xbox Wire post, “Our work with LG is the latest example of Xbox expanding to new places, building on partnerships that already bring Xbox Cloud Gaming to mobile devices, PCs, and TVs. By adding vehicles to the mix, we’re giving players more choice than ever in how they enjoy their games.”
