Resident Evil 0 — the survival horror game getting an HD remaster for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC — was originally intended to launch on the Nintendo 64.
Developer Capcom today shared a video that traces Resident Evil 0 back to its N64 roots, comparing in-game footage from the 1999 prototype, the 2002 GameCube original, and the upcoming HD Remaster due to release in 2016. Capcom is finding a lot of success bringing back its old titles with a fresh look — recently selling over 1 million copies of the original Resident Evil’s HD remaster — and this new video gives a great insight into the process.
Watching it, we can see what might have been and also what we can expect from Resident Evil 0 HD. Visually, the N64 prototype looks remarkably different to the game that first appeared in 2002 on the GameCube, just two years after it was initially slated for an N64 release. It shows just how quickly technology moves along in the gaming industry.
