Nitro said in a report that, in the first half of 2026, browser game domains on Nitro’s network more than doubled, and monthly browser game sessions rose 77.5%.

Nitro, Overwolf’s monetization platform for browser-based games and gaming content websites, today released its first Web Game Ad Monetization Benchmark Report. The report covers 4.17 billion sessions across 806 publisher domains between January and July 2026. And it said that monthly browser game sessions grew from 18.4 million in January to 32.6 million in June.

Browser games are also taking the lead commercially. They account for just 4.1% of network sessions but generate 9.7% of total earnings, more revenue per session than any other vertical on the network. Their Revenue Per Session (RPS) is 176% above the network average, the report said.

Competitive strategy games see 15 to 45-minute sessions, while virtual worlds and RPGs reach 30 to 60 minutes or longer. Daily-ritual titles routinely keep 40% to 50% of their players at Day 7 and Day 30, while hyper-casual mobile games typically lose 70% to 80% by Day 7. An engaged eight-minute session can serve 8 to 12 ad impressions through IAB-compliant refreshes, compared with 2 to 3 for a 2-minute visit. That’s why the report argues that RPS, not pageview-based RPM, should be the standard benchmark for web game monetization.

U.S. traffic earns nearly 60% more per session than the global baseline. Persistent virtual worlds average above $80 in US RPS and peak above $110 in summer. Ad placement matters just as much: sticky bottom anchors drove nearly 39% of net ad revenue, and floating video units produced nearly 10% of earnings from fewer than 5% of active ad units.

“Gaming websites behave very differently from traditional content websites, and that’s something generic ad tech doesn’t always account for,” said Cody Bye, cofounder of Nitro, in a statement. “A player might spend 30 minutes or more on a single page without ever refreshing it. We built Nitro with those environments in mind, to give gaming publishers the flexibility and control to monetize long, highly engaged sessions without compromising the experience they’ve worked so hard to create. Instead of trying to squeeze as many ads as possible into a session, the goal is to make the most of the engagement that’s already there, in a way that makes sense for the player and creates sustainable revenue for the developer.”

Abe Train shows what those numbers look like for a single developer. In late 2021, he left his role as head of business intelligence at HelloFresh Canada to build Globle, a geography guessing game that went viral. His Toronto-based studio, Trainwreck Labs, now runs a portfolio of 10 browser games that has generated more than $1 million in revenue, without a single full-time employee. Train’s one firm rule is that ads stay outside the playable area of the screen.

“If it is a game, I have to be very careful that the ad doesn’t interfere with the gameplay,” said Train, in a statement. “Having fine-grained control over the ad design and placement, and being able to see how each game is performing on the dashboard, makes a huge difference.”

The report launches alongside the Base44 x Nitro Web Game Contest, run with the AI app-building platform Base44. The contest invites creators to build original browser games for $65,000 in cash prizes, including a $25,000 grand prize. Submissions are open from November 5 through December 3, 2026, and top entries will be featured in the Overwolf App Store. Details are at nitropay.com/base44webgame.
