A new trailer for Quantic Dream’s Beyond: Two Souls, the developer’s PlayStation 3 follow-up to the cinematic Heavy Rain, premiered tonight at New York City’s Tribeca Film Festival. It’s the second time a video game has participated in the festival, following L.A. Noire two years ago.
The trailer lays out the basic premise of Beyond, but it also gives us plenty more footage to whet our appetites for the title’s October release.
Ellen Page (who starred in films like Juno and Inception) stars as Jodie Holmes, a young girl mysteriously linked to an entity she calls Aiden, who she can talk to telepathically and rely on for help throughout the game. Beyond covers 15 years of Jodie’s life — from her early years to her troubled adulthood — as she tries to figure out her place in the world (being able to talk to a spirit isn’t really a recipe for normalcy, after all).
The trailer begins with Jodie calling a friend, Nathan Dawkins (played by Willem Dafoe), who serves as her surrogate father after her parents apparently abandon her. We see glimpses of Jodie’s childhood, including a vicious scene with her father calling her a monster, as well as her training with the CIA.
David Cage, founder of Quantic Dream and the game’s director, joined Page and other members of the cast to show off more than 30 minutes of the game’s footage tonight. Look out for more coverage around that soon. Beyond: Two Souls debuts on the PS3 on Oct. 8.
