Developer Beyond The Pixels and the publishing team at Pixel Doors have announced July 30th as the official 1.0 launch date for Astro Burn on Steam and GOG. Retro enthusiasts and physical media collectors rallied to push the Astro Burn Kickstarter campaign to 150% of its initial goal.
Because of this, 33 Games is delivering a premium physical release featuring custom USB cartridges, cassette tape soundtracks, and exclusive lore-filled trading cards alongside the digital storefront launch.
Director HaZ Dulull and his collaborators utilized direct player reviews, Discord bug reports, TwitchCon feedback, and live gameplay metrics gathered at events such as IGN Live to completely reshape the title from a raw passion project into a polished final product.
“We looked at every stream, read every single Discord comment and Steam review, and let the community guide the development priorities,” said HaZ Dulull, founder of Beyond The Pixels, in a press release.
“A great example of this was how we ended up implementing our Color Blind support mode (aptly named ‘Meowcromatic’) into the game. Our community loved the mono look and feel so much that we reshaped it into a fresh alternative experience paying homage to Mad Max: Fury Road Chrome Edition. We put it as a front-of-game option for players to experience, not just an accessibility feature. The community truly built this 1.0 version right alongside us.”
To address player requests for more variety, deeper polish, and old-school arcade charm, the team added a wave of new content for the 1.0 launch. According to the press release, this included:
● The Epic Narrative Conclusion: Players can finally pilot Astro and her robot sidekick, AL, through the brand-new Levels 8 and 9 to uncover the emotional conclusion of their cosmic journey.
● Unhinged New Features for Humans (and Felines): Introducing “Cat TV Mode,” allowing real-life cats to enjoy three specialized entertainment channels, alongside a deeply relaxing “ASMR Mode,” where gamers can unwind with ambient ocean waves and cat purrs between intense bullet-hell runs.
● Competitive Co-Op Mode: Seven levels of couch/local co-op competitive action on the same screen, so expect shoulders to bump a lot!
● Speedrunners and Tacticians Re-Armed: Speedrunners can now exploit brand-new “Speed Zones” (including a high-risk Turbo Speed setting) to optimize their time-attack runs, while weapon testers receive an upgraded front-and-back green projectile and a devastating six-degree spread shot.
● Weaponized Snacks & Kitten Rescues: Following community suggestions, the artists swapped out traditional bullets for flying food treats, allowing players to defeat oversized bosses like PooBear on the Party Bus entirely with snacks. Players will also earn massive bonus scores by tracking down and saving lost kittens, triggering upgraded animations filled with popping bubbles and floating hearts.
● Fully Verified & Globally Localized: Handheld gamers can now play flawlessly on the go, as the team secured official Steam Deck Verified status alongside full optimization for Valve’s brand spanking new Steam Machine. The translation team also fully localized the experience into eight new languages—including Japanese, French, Spanish, and Simplified Chinese—using a custom, highly readable font designed for smaller handheld screens.
