Atari was supposed to start taking preorders along with launching its crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo today for its new Ataribox console. However, it seems to have hit an unspecified snag and in an email announced that the campaign will be on hold, with more details to come.

“Because of one key element on our checklist, it is taking more time to create the platform and ecosystem the Atari community deserves,” Atari said in a statement. “Building Ataribox is incredibly important to us and we will do whatever it takes to be sure it is worth the wait.”

The Ataribox is the first new piece of hardware from the company in over 20 years, and it will launch with a back catalog of classic Atari games. It’s a bid to capitalize on a wave of nostalgia that’s pushed retro consoles like the NES and SNES Classic to financial success. However, it will also be able to run modern mid-range PC games, and it will also perform other functions folks may want from a console such as streaming, playing music, and browsing the web.
