Army of Two Review PS3 6/10
The Good: Smart Enemy AI
The Bad: Your partner not cooperating
Watch it: Controversial Storyline
After all the hype and attention Army of Two received for it's groundbreaking co-op mechanics, players would be expecting it to be a flawless, well developed experience. Playing a game revolving around using two characters simultaneously would give players hope that their partner's AI would be superb. Unfortunately, the game gives you neither.
Army of Two is a third person shooter with a slightly offset camera, and the game play shines with features like the Aggrometer and the spectacular graphics. Army of Two provides the player with great sound as well! All of the guns have unique sounds, and when you shoot different surfaces, including wood, glass and stone, you hear the sounds you would expect to hear. All of the guns are completely customizable as well, letting you choose how you want to play the game, whether that be a bit stealthily, or with all out bravado.
The negatives, unfortunately, far outweigh these cool, positive features. Your partner's AI, which is what is supposed to set this game apart, fails, and it's because it is much worse than that of your enemies. It is extremely frustrating when you direct your partner to do a certain task, such as trade weapons with you, and he refuses. Also, your partner is nearly useless if you tell him to advance and take charge.
On the other hand, however, the enemy’s AI is spectacular. They flank, duck and are constantly changing their position. Now why can’t your partner be like that? Coming from a game designed to be played with an intelligent, computer controlled counterpart, your partner's incompetence is a travesty!
Other infractions such as not being able to assume a prone position only dampen the experience further. Oh yeah, and the enemies must be able to see through walls and have supersonic ears, because every time I would try to sneak somewhere (crouched, mind you) they would always spot me and come charging. I give Army of Two a 6 out of 10.
