Sony is giving its online infrastructure a bit of a nip and a tuck.

PlayStation Network is down today. The company revealed that it is performing routine maintenance on its servers today, which has many aspects of PlayStation’s online service offline. Sony’s tech experts started hammering away at PSN at 10 a.m. Pacific time, and the service won’t fully come back until 5 p.m. Pacific tonight. This means that you can’t play online multiplayer games with friends and strangers.

“If you’ve signed into [PlayStation Network] any time since Oct. 8, you will be able to play games online and access partner apps such as Netflix during this maintenance period,” reads a post on Sony’s PlayStation forums. “The PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home, and Account Management will not be available during this time, and users may receive a maintenance notification when attempting to access these services.”

This is completely normal for PlayStation Network. Sony takes down the service on an almost monthly basis to perform this kind of maintenance. If problems persist beyond 5 p.m., we will keep you posted.
