Assassin's Creed Pirates to pillage smartphones, tablets this fall

Publisher Ubisoft today unveiled Assassin’s Creed Pirates, a standalone game for high-end smartphones and tablets that lets you lead the life of an ambitious young captain in search of treasure in the Caribbean without the fear of scurvy or undead CGI monkeys.

The focus of Pirates is on real-time naval battles, although it has some light role-playing elements as well. Players can manage a crew of scurrilous scalawags and upgrade their ship with booty earned through battle or exploration. Ubisoft is also promising dozens of side missions, along with treasure quests, perks, and achievements. Updates are planned for the game post-launch.

Although Caribbean pirates are also the focus of Ubisoft’s upcoming Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, and both games take place in the same universe, the publisher said the two storylines are not linked. “Our idea was to enrich the universe of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, not to copy it,” Ubisoft said.

Pirates has reportedly been in development for six months. A brand new mobile engine has been designed for the game, one that includes 3D visuals and changing weather conditions that will directly affect gameplay.

Pirates will launch sometime this fall. A price has not been set, but Ubisoft assures there will be no in-app purchases.
