GDC Festival of Gaming will skip Friday in 2027 event

Join independent journalists and industry decision-makers at GamesBeat NEXT, returning to San Francisco November 2–3. The event brings together 500 executives, founders, investors and tech leaders shaping the $200 billion interactive economy for candid discussions on gaming, entertainment, technology and AI, plus executive networking and opportunities to build partnerships and close major deals.

GDC Festival of Gaming, one of the biggest game development events in the world, announced that it will focus on just four days for its show in March 2027, cutting off the usual Friday for the event.

In a statement, GDC described its event as the global gathering for everyone who makes games happen. The event will now take place from Monday, March 1, 2027, to Thursday, March 4 — or four focused days of learning, networking and business.

“For almost four decades, we have evolved with the industry, reshaping each year to deliver an unmissable experience where the people making games can come together to celebrate, and define where games go next,” said Informa, owner of GDC, in a post. “Each year, we seek to unlock more value, more connection, and more opportunities for the entire gaming community.

As the industry continues to evolve, so does GDC, the post said. This move from five days to four is a deliberate step toward creating a higher quality, more focused and more valuable experience.

“Having explored the data and listened to our community, we’re concentrating programming and opportunities during the days when the community is most active, while making it easier for attendees to balance their time at GDC with their professional and personal commitments,” Informa said.

In 2027, attendees can expect expect robust conference programming, larger session rooms, more hands-on workshops, interactive experiences, and expanded networking over the four days. Here’s how this shapes up over the course of GDC Festival of Gaming 2027:

  • The Business Hall at Moscone West will offer dedicated meeting and dealmaking space, Monday through Thursday.
  • Conference programming will run Monday through Thursday, covering the art of making games, running a successful games business, and emerging trends.
  • The Festival Hall at Moscone South will run Tuesday through Thursday, bringing together activations, partner stages, lounges, and community experiences.

Career development continues to be a priority with options for every level of the GDC community, from those looking to enter the game industry to those looking to level up. Rather than limiting career-focused programming to a single day (formerly Friday), GDC will integrate career sessions, portfolio reviews, practical workshops, and hands-on ask-me-anything sessions across all four days. Thursday will be home to Student Day, featuring tailored programming for high school and college students exploring careers in the game industry; future-proofing our industry and supporting the next generation of people that love games.

This evolution is part of a broader commitment to delivering more value, access and choice, Informa said. GDC Festival of Gaming 2027 introduces an expanded range of pass options, including new, lower-cost tiers.

“We are also continuing our scholarship program to offer 2,000+ Festival Passes annually through partner organizations for underrepresented developers and those affected by layoffs,” Informa said. “Our goal remains the same: to bring the industry together in a way that makes every day, every connection, and every opportunity at GDC count.”
