Nintendo to celebrate Kirby’s 20th anniversary by beating a silly world record

Kirby Gum

Nintendo knows how to celebrate. This is the company that has thrown nine Mario Parties. And remember that time Mario and Link hijacked the falling ball during last New Year’s celebration in Times Square? Classic. Oh, wait…I think that last one was just a weird dream I had.

The point is that you know Nintendo was going to do something awesome to mark Kirby’s 20th anniversary. The pink ball of puff has been a mainstay in the Japanese publisher’s library since it released Kirby’s Dream Land for the Game Boy in 1992. So how do you ring in such a momentous occasion? By making a lot of people chew bubble gum, of course!

Wait — what?

Yup, Nintendo is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for “most people blowing a chewing gum bubble simultaneously.” Well, I guess a gum bubble looks like a pink ball, and Kirby is a pink ball. So…yeah. Hey, why the hell not?

Nintendo will recruit attendees at next week’s PAX Prime convention in Seattle for the attempt on September 1. Well, at least they’ll all get some free gum.

If you’ve not a big fan of bubbles, you can also celebrate Kirby’s birthday by buying Kirby’s Dream Collection: Special Edition for the Wii, which Nintendo will release on September 16. The compilation will include six games from the franchise’s storied history.

Good luck, noble flavored rubber blowers! May the spirit of Kirby be with you!
