Atlus already teased it was working on a Shin Megami Tensei role-plainyg game for the Switch. But now we know that it will be the next main installment in the series, Shin Megami Tensei V.
Atlus made the reveal with a Japanese trailer it released last night, which you can watch above. The Shin Megami Tensei series used to rarely venture outside of Japan, but the brand brought in a new wave of worldwide fans with the Persona spinoff games. Persona 5 released for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 earlier this year and sold more than 2 million copies.
While the Persona games are relatively lighthearted, the Shin Megami Tensei series is darker and usually focuses on a demon-ridden Tokyo.
The Megami Tensei series started in the late ’80s with RPGs for the Famicom (the Japanese version of the Nintendo Entertainment System). Those early games never made saw release outside of Japan. The franchise has spawned a lot of spinoffs, including Persona. That’s why when Atlus announced that a Shin Megami Tensei game was coming to Switch, we couldn’t be sure that it would be Shin Megami Tensei V.
The series has not been a stranger to Nintendo in recent year. Shin Megami Tensei IV came out for the 3DS portable system in 2013, and its self-contained sequel — Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse — followed in 2016.
The Switch is a home console/portable hybrid. Getting Shin Megami Tensei V is a big deal for the system’s Japanese RPG prospects. Nintendo also has its own JRPG, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, releasing for the Switch on December 1, while Square Enix is working on Project Octopath Traveler for the system, which will come out at some point in 2018.
