5th Cell to crowdfund for original game on Kickstarter-alternative Fig

Scribblenauts developer 5th Cell announced today it will raise money on the Fig crowdfunding site in a campaign that begins on Oct. 21.

The new campaign is another endorsement for Fig, which just launched its alternative game funding business in competition with Kickstarter. 5th Cell said it will use the money to create a new original intellectual property. Fig was founded by Justin Bailey, Freeman White, and Bob Ippolito and was established from a coalition of independent game developers including Tim Schafer (Double Fine), Feargus Urquhart (Obsidian), and Brian Fargo (InExile), all of whom plan to use it in the future.

The first campaign on Fig, Outer Wilds, hit its funding goal and received more than $800,000 in investment, though the company, Mobius Digital, took less than that amount.

Fig has updated its ability to register and take on accredited investors.

Founded in 2003 by Jeremiah Slaczka, Joseph Tringali and Marius Fahlbusch, 5th Cell garnered worldwide acclaim with the release of its innovative franchise Scribblenauts, which won many awards including Best of E3. The Scribblenauts franchise has sold over 13 million copies to date and spawned original titles all developed or co-developed by 5th Cell. 5th Cell’s portfolio of titles also include the multimillion selling franchise Drawn to Life and the iOS hit Run Roo Run.

“At 5th Cell, we’re excited about our latest original IP, which introduces new gameplay innovations and is set in a deep and engaging universe unlike any other,” said Jeremiah Slaczka, CEO and creative director at 5th Cell, in a statement. “We look forward to bringing on investors who want to share in the future financial success of the title, while helping us to bring the game’s unique universe to life. We watched Fig’s first campaign, Outer Wilds, attract over $1 million in potential accredited investment and felt that of all the funding platforms, Fig’s was the perfect fit for our new IP.”

Fig provides a featured crowdfunding experience that strikes a balance between titles from well-known independent studios and ones from up-and-coming indie teams. Fig allows accredited investors to participate in the potential success of a game title by investing in Fig’s co-publishing company, which holds a license to certain distribution rights to the title.
